Dig the Kid is a high energy 3 piece, alternative rock-pop ensemble from the San Francisco Bay Area that pushes the boundaries of what defines a traditional band’s “sound”. DTK is comprised of singer and guitarist Cory Todd, drummer Lisa Mongelli and bassist Ian Lasater. On any given song DTK changes the arrangement of instruments for a musical ménage a trois. Alternative, calypso, punk, soul, grunge, pop, reggae or straight ahead rock n’ roll, to hear Dig the Kid is like hitting shuffle on your vast musical library.
As a lead-up to South by Southwest, The Noise Room is talking to bands and artists performing at SXSW. Here’s what Dig the Kid had to say:
What do like most about playing at SXSW?
We love performing for new audiences and discovering new music. There is an enormous amount of talent from all over the world that never has the chance to be heard. SXSW gives musicians the opportunity to showcase their talent. We love meeting new connections, and new bands. Networking is definitely a fundamental resource for all music and it is definitely our favorite part of being a band.
Are you out promoting anything?
We have just released our album “Colours” exclusively on Spotify. It’s also available for purchase on iTunes! We released a music video for our first single from “Colours” called “On a Mission!” It’s high-energy, packed with our friends, and was so much fun to film! For a glimpse into our life on the road, we release an episode of “Band in a Van” weekly. Check it out to see our real-life experiences from touring!
Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
Definitely. Brick & Mortar, Bad Suns, The Districts, Gentleman Hall, Bend Sinister, Band of Skulls, Gloryhound, the Last Royals, Ages and Ages, Air Traffic Controller, Basic Vacation and The Wind and the Wave.
What are the challenges for you or your band when playing at SXSW?
Everyone is trying to make a name for themselves. The entire festival is saturated with talent fighting for a glimpse of the spotlight. The challenge is to grab the people you’ve made friends with, or the ones you want to rub elbows with, and give them a lasting impression to take home and share with 5 of their friends. Our goal is to make sure that everyone in the crowd is having as much fun as we are on stage.
Do you have any survival tips for those attending SXSW?
Make as many friends as you can and take advantage of every opportunity thrown your way.
Are you more “stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene” or “play as many shows as possible then get out”?
We are absolutely both. We will play as many shows as possible but we are music fans as well, and this is the mecca.
