Paper Lions are an indie rock band from Belfast, PEI whose music shines with sunny melodies and tales of lost youth. Equally influenced by the clear-voiced harmonies of the Beach Boys and the clanging guitars of modern rock, at the heart of the band are long-standing friendships and vibrant pop songs based on the sandy shores of their remote island province. Formed from a creative partnership that began in their adolescence, the band really found its shape in 2007. Rob and John MacPhee are brothers, Colin Buchanan is their childhood neighbour, and David Cyrus MacDonald they met in high school, but it took time and effort, practicing in garages and playing in clubs across North America, to become the band they are now.
As a lead-up to South by Southwest, The Noise Room is talking to bands and artists performing at SXSW. Here’s what Paper Lions had to say:
What do like most about playing at SXSW?
Escaping the Canadian winter.
Are you out promoting anything?
Currently promoting a Digital EP titled “Acquaintances”. It features of two remixes done by our friends The Octopus Project and Whale Skin, and a B-side from our last album called “My Friends”.
Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
St. Vincent, Black Lips, anyone and everyone really.
What are the challenges for you or your band when playing at SXSW?
With so much music happening all at once in one city, I think the largest challenge is making as big of an impression as you can.
Do you have any survival tips for those attending SXSW?
I think having a good quality pair of shoes is important or better yet, A BIKE!
Are you more “stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene” or “play as many shows as possible then get out”?
Both I’d say. We played quite a number of shows last year so some of the other guys in the band got a bit burnt out but we are usually pretty good to strike a balance between business and pleasure.
