Tour Design: Creating the Live Experience with Jake Jorgovan

Jake Jorgovan is co-founder of Rabbit Hole Creative. He started the company out of his basement at the age of 15 and has grown it into a creative boutique shop that designs tours and events for artists and advertising agencies. Recent clients have included Cee Lo Green, Dolly Parton, Cirque du Soleil, Paramore, MUTEMATH, and Five Finger Death Punch. Jake’s passion lies in media creation. The fact that as one person, or a small team of people, it is possible to create a message to distribute to hundreds, to thousands, to millions of people, is what drives him in life.

Jake organized the Tour Design – Creating the Live Experience panel at South by Southwest. Moderated by John Ingrassi, this panel will take place on Thursday, March 15 from 5:15PM to 6:15PM in the Austin Convention Center, Room 17A. We asked Jake a few questions about the panel:

What was your interest in creating this panel and how does it relate to your background?

This panel was created with the intent to educate artists, managers and labels about the idea of tour design. There are a lot of different elements that go into designing the visual elements of a stage. Lighting, video, content, lasers, pyro and special effects. There are a lot of elements that go into designing a tour, and this panel is meant to educate artists and managers on the process of how to design a tour.

My background is in content design for tours. Whenever a band carries LED walls or video screens on their tour, someone needs to design video for those screens. Rabbit Hole Creative’s role is to design custom content specific to each songs look and feel for an entire artists tour.

Who else is on the panel and what do they bring to the subject?

Ken Gay is an industry veteran who has worked on tours and events for years. Ken was one of the video designers on this years Superbowl Halftime show with Madonna.

John Ingrassi is an artist manager from Vector Management (Kesha, Kings of Leon) and is bringing to the table the perspective of tour design from an artist managers viewpoint.

Genell Cantby works with Image Engineering and designs laser and special effects shows. She has designed shows for Cee Lo Green, David Guetta, and Bassnectar.

Why is this panel important to musicians?

A tour design is really an extension of that artists personality. It is important for the artist to understand the process of tour design so they can communication their message and their vision through their stage design. Every show design is just an extension of that artists creativity.

What do you hope people will walk away with after attending this panel?

My hopes are that people can walk away from this panel with creative ideas on how to improve the design of their tours, and a deeper understanding of the process that goes into designing a tour.
