Grammy nominated producer/mixer Tim Palmer has been making cutting edge music for over 25 years. He has produced for such diverse acts as David Bowie, Robert Plant, Switchfoot, Tears for Fears and Ozzy Osbourne, and more recently The Goo Goo Dolls and Blue October. He has mixed albums for U2, Pearl Jam, The Cure, Porcupine Tree and countless others. Tim recently moved to Austin, where he has built his latest mix room. He will be moderating the Producer to Producer panel at South by Southwest on Saturday, March 17 from 2:00PM to 3:00PM in the Austin Convention Center, Room 18ABC. We asked Tim a few questions about the panel:
What was your interest in creating this panel and how does it relate to your background?
I created this panel as a reaction to my last three years on panels at SXSW. This year I want the conversation to be looser and give the actual producers a real opportunity to ask each other the questions they have always wanted to ask about their individual careers!
Who else is on the panel and what do they bring to the subject?
All of the panelists have worked on classic albums and singles, so here is a chance for the audience to ask Malcolm Burn about recording Emmylou Harris, or Nick Launay about Midnight Oil, maybe Dave Way about mixing for Michael Jackson. I may even discuss how I received death threats while producing Ozzy Osbourne! Please check out the discographies of the producers on my panel and then come along armed with some constructive and interesting questions.
Why is this panel important to musicians?
The panel is important as it will be a wonderful opportunity for engineers and musicians to learn from professionals, all of whom have contributed to a wealth of classic albums and singles.
What do you hope people will walk away with after attending this panel?
Walk away from this panel with inside knowledge about the recording techniques, the musicians, the concerns and even the psychology of these sessions.
