Sleepy Kitty – Interview

Hailing from St. Louis, this award-winning duo comprised of Paige Brubeck and former Harvey Danger bandmate Evan Sult takes 90s grunge and makes it all their own. Releasing their glittering art-punk achievement and sophomore album, “Projection Room,” in January, 2014, the band has caught the attention of the likes of TWELV, Idobi, Paste, The Huffington Post and All Things Go. Their live show is not to be missed, with heavenly Paige slaying guitar in bare feet and Evan barely containing himself behind his drum kit, it’s hard to believe a sound so big can be made by just two people!

As a lead-up to South by Southwest, The Noise Room is talking to bands and artists performing at SXSW. Here’s what Sleepy Kitty had to say:

What do like most about playing at SXSW?

I love the festival energy. It’s great to meet a bunch of different musicians who are all in town at the same time, and great to find out about new bands that way. There’s so much going on at once it’s really like a music city for that week.

Are you out promoting anything?

Our new album Projection Room just came out in January!

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?

We love Parquet Courts, and Temples I’ve been getting into lately. But also, I love finding out about bands just by playing at the same showcase.

What are the challenges for you or your band when playing at SXSW?

The first time we did SXSW I felt like were constantly moving gear or moving the van. It’s definitely part of the job, but you really gotta stay on it. Getting towed on tour is no good.

Do you have any survival tips for those attending SXSW?

Don’t stress about trying to catch everything and let yourself wander into awesome shows that you didn’t know you were going to enjoy. And drink lots of water.

Are you more “stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene” or “play as many shows as possible then get out”?

I’d say somewhere in between. I love to play as many shows as we can – we’ve got 6 shows in 3 days and I’m very excited about that, but one of my favorite parts of tour is getting to spend time in different cities! Hopefully we’ll have some time to enjoy Austin and catch some shows we’re not playing before leaving town.
